How to Repair a Garage Door Spring?

Dana Benally October 7, 2022 2 minutes read

If your garage door is giving you trouble, it might be time to replace the springs. This can be a tricky repair, so it’s best to leave it to the professionals. Hiring a garage door repair contractor will save you time and hassle, and they will be able to ensure that the job is done right.

Springs are under a lot of tension, so it’s important to be careful when working with them. Replacing them yourself could result in serious injury or damage to your property. A qualified garage door repair Hampton company will have the experience and knowledge necessary to safely and effectively replace your springs.

In addition, a professional will be able to properly adjust the tension on your garage door springs. This is a critical step in the repair process and one that is often overlooked by do-it-yourselfers. Incorrectly adjusted springs can cause all sorts of problems, including premature wear and tear and damage to your opener.

If you’re having trouble with your garage door, don’t try to tackle the repair yourself. Hire a professional garage door repair Portsmouth contractor to get the job done right.

Most Common Garage Spring Types

There are two different types of garage door springs – torsion springs and extension springs. Torsion springs are located above the door, while extension springs are located on either side of the door.

If your garage door is making a creaking noise or isn’t opening and closing smoothly, one of the springs likely needs to be replaced. Depending on the type of spring, the replacement process will be different.

If you have torsion springs, you’ll need to call a professional to replace them. Torsion springs are under a lot of tension and can be dangerous to replace if you’re not experienced.

Extension springs are easier to replace, but you’ll still need a few tools. You’ll need to disconnect the garage door opener and remove the brackets holding the springs in place. Once the springs are removed, you can install the new ones by following the reverse process.

If you’re unsure which type of spring your garage door has, or if you don’t feel comfortable replacing them yourself, call a professional. They’ll be able to quickly identify the problem and get your garage door working properly again.
